The History of Our Bier

Authentic German bier, still brewed the authentic German way.

In Germany, making great bier is more than a proud tradition. It’s the law.

Specifically, it’s the Reínheítsgebot — or the German Purity Law of 1516. That’s right: More than 500 years ago, Bavarians were serious about craft brewing.

They knew that making consistently good bier requires skill, discipline, and detailed knowledge of ingredients and processes. The law was put in place to ensure the tradition would live on.

At Hofbräuhaus, we’re proud to have continued that tradition through the centuries – from the founding of our original brewery in Munich in 1589, to every Hofbräuhaus location around the world today.
